George Wesley Bellows
20th century
(Columbus, Ohio, 1882 - 1925, New York, New York)

Born 1882, Columbus, OH; active 1904–25, New York (with summers 1911–16 in Monhegan Island, ME, and 1920–25 in Woodstock, NY); died 1925, New York Bellows came to New York City in 1904 from his childhood home of Ohio and was, like so many artists, overwhelmed by the city, particularly its street culture, which seemed to offer a distinctly American sort of life. While not an original member of The Eight, the group of realist painters taught and led by Robert Henri, Bellows adopted the groups anti-academic philosophy and achieved recognition more quickly and completely than any of its members.
