From state fairs to swamps, David Bates’ subject matter is rooted in the American south. His style, on the other hand, might best be described as expressionistic. It is characterized by an angularity and vibrant color that seems to derive from cubism and folk art simultaneously. Raised in Garland, Texas, Bates received his M.F.A. at Southern Methodist University and completed an independent study at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He has paintings and sculptures in exhibitions and major museums across the country. Works: Dallas, 1971 - present.
