Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert
16th century
(Amsterdam, 1522 - 1590, Gouda (The Netherlands))

Humanist and writer in addition to printmaker, Coornhert was among the first to import the Italian system of reproductive printmaking to the Netherlands. Later he would teach some of the principal engravers of the next generation, including Philips Galle and Goltzius. Most of his works translate drawings by Heemskerck into an exaggerated but perfectly regular Romanist style that became an idiom of mid-century engraving. Many, in series of six to ten plates, illustrate Old Testament narratives.
