Agostino Carracci
16th century
(Bologna, Italy, 1557 - 1602, Parma, Italy)
With his younger brother, Annibale, and cousin Lodovico, Agostino Carracci was an instigator and the most intellectual voice in the revolutionary movement toward naturalistic and affecting representation in late 16th-century Bolognese painting. He was also the most accomplished and influential engraver in late-century Italy. Many of his works reproduce paintings that helped inspire and guide the Carraccis’ pictorial reform.
