Abraham Bosse
17th century
(Tours, France, 1602 - 1676, Paris)

Bosse’s etchings affect the appearance, therefore the lofty associations, of engraving. His concern with technique as such began with his teacher, Jacques Callot, and carried through his entire career. Bosse was also a friend of Robert Nanteuil; together they experimented with ways to improve the techniques of printmaking. In 1645 Bosse published Traité des manières de graver en taille-douce, the period’s most important treatise on etching.
