Eugène Bléry
19th century
(Fontainebleau, France, 1805 - 1887, Paris)

Early in his career, Bléry traveled through the provinces of France specializing in landscapes for the tourist trade. His most distinctive work is that of his exacting descriptions of specific species of plants achieved with the delicate and meticulous touch of the etching needle. As Charles Meryon's mentor in the Barbizon forest where Bléry eventually settled, he encouraged the study of the seventeenth-century Dutch etchers that had served as his own inspiration.
