Adolphe Appian
19th century
(Lyon, 1818 - 1898, Lyon)

As early as 1852, Appian, Corot and Daubigny sketched and painted landscapes together in the area surrounding the medieval town of Crémieu east of Lyon. Alfred Cadart published all of Appian's etchings from 1861 until 1881 and Cadart's office in Paris became a gathering place for many etchers. Like Maxime Lalanne, Appian produced finished drawings in charcoal, writing a treatise on the subject in 1867; and his etchings demonstrate the same interest in tonal nuance and variation as can be found in his drawings.
