Maurice Brazil Prendergast
19th-20th century
(St. John's (Newfoundland) Canada, 1858 - 1924, New York City)

Prendergast's love of color developed during his trips to France, Italy, and elsewhere in Europe in the 1890s where he saw the vivid work of Post-Impressionists Paul C├ęzanne and Paul Gauguin and the European modernists. Prendergast was one of the instrumental planners of the Armory Show of 1913 in New York, which exposed many Americans to the work of these and other avant-garde European artists for the first time.
