Painter, draftsmen, printmaker. Studied at the Glasgow School of Art. ABecame associate of the Royal Academy in 1921 and member in 1935. Curator of the Tate Gallery from 1928-1935. Specialized in portraits. During WWI, was employed by the Ministry of Information to produce portraits of militrary leaders and during WWII was commissioned to make works for the War Artists Advisory Committee.
