Macleod first worked in a bank before going into the service during World War I. Upon his release from the military, he attended the Glasgow School of Art and worked for the Glasgow Evening News as a cartoonist. He exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, in Liverpool and at the Paris Salons.
