William Lewis Lester
20th century
(Graham, Texas, 1910 - 1991, Austin, Texas)
Texas artist William Lester was born in Graham, Texas. He studied at the Dallas Art Institute and exhibited with the Dallas Nine, a group of artists that included Everett Spruce and Jerry Bywaters. The Dallas Nine strove for a regionalist aesthetic that reflected a distinct Texas identity. Lester has written, “Life and especially visual nature are the most important if not the principal source of inspiration and ideas for my painting. . . . At times my work might be classified as ‘abstract,’ but it is always, I hope, rooted in visual reality.”
