Miguel González writes in Bartelman’s obituary: “He participated in the process of lyrical abstract painting that developed in Colombia during the 1950s and 1960s, managing to create an individual style in his practice of expressionist painting; a large part of his production was characterizaed by bold gestures and textural surfaces. His work made an undeniable contribution to the achievement of Colombian abstract art.” Art Nexus 31 (Feb./Apr. 1999).
