Jan Roos, called Giovanni Rosa
(1591 - 1638)
Jan (or Giovanni) Roos trained in his native Flanders and specialized in animal subjects. First noted in Rome, he flourished in Genoa from 1614 until the end of his career. His work epitomizes the school’s fascination with Netherlands painting and offers early examples of what became a prominent genre there. Specifically, Roos anticipated and deeply influenced the school’s greatest master of the period, Castiglione.
