The art school emphasized bravura brushwork, favored a dark palette, and encouraged study of Old Masters like Velásquez and Hals. Chase himself mastered several styles and subjects: pastel and oil; dark and bright palettes; landscape, still life, and portraiture. Chase was lauded as a master teacher and innovator.
