Luis Cruz Azaceta
20th century
(Havana, Cuba, 1942 - )

Moved to Hoboken, NJ in 1960; Moved to New York in 1963; Moved to New Orleans in 1992. An 18-year old immigrant from Cuba in 1960, Azaceta began making art shortly after his arrival in New York. Coming of age artistically during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Azaceta was influenced by the formalism and grid-based abstraction of the day. But like all contemporary artists, he has synthesized current artistic concerns with those of the masters—in Azaceta’s case, the social critique of early 20th-century Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and José Clemente Orozco, and the vivid humanism of the great European painters Hieronymus Bosch, Francisco Goya and Max Beckmann.
