Since the early 1970s, Bill Viola has used video to investigate sensory perception and its relationship to self-knowledge. His groundbreaking installations explore universal themes of human experience, including birth, death, and the unfolding of consciousness. Viola’s works are rooted in both Eastern and Western aesthetics, and at the intersection of a variety of ancient and contemporary spiritual traditions, including Islamic Sufism, Christian mysticism, and Zen Buddhism
