Formally trained as a civil engineer, Farrell was a self-taught artist who took advice from Scottish artist Muirhead Bone. He continued in the tradition of British topographical etchers focusing on views of London. He made his home in Glasgow and exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.
