Castiglione assimilated Rembrandt's dense, scribbly lines to produce rich textures and a range of dark tonalities. Two series of imaginary studies, traditionally called “oriental heads,” additionally reflect Rembrandt’s interest in physiognomy. In both subject and handling, they were influential through the 18th century, with particular effect upon the Tiepolos and development of original etching in Venice.
