A group of drawings by Watteau in red chalk copy earlier Italian sheets in the great collection of his patron Pierre Crozat. The symmetrical structure and distinct planes of this composition derive from seventeenth-century Roman examples. The touch, however, is a bit tentative––note the uncertain path of many lines––and the handling is uniform, suggesting that the drawing was created by another artist in the circle of Watteau.
