The Château of Clagny (constructed 1674-80), a satellite château located northeast of the Château of Versailles, was designed by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart for Madame de Montespan, a mistress of Louis XIV. The garden was laid out by André Le Nôtre.
The print depicting the garden façade shows an axial view of the parterres de broderie, two pavilions amidst groves on either side, and the château building with the sun emblem above the central pediment.
