Etchings of animals were an important genre in 17th-century Holland. At their best, they convey an assurance of place that expresses the Dutch character and a tenderness of interaction that touches the patient observer. One of a set of thirteen animals, the print is appealing enough in its sound composition and dignified characterization. The impression, however, is breathtaking, with the dense polishing scratches and velvety blacks of the first pulls from the plate.
