Guiseppe Tartini (1692-1770) was an Italian composer who claimed that his sonata The Devil’s Trill (circa 1730) was inspired by a dream he had. The story fired the imagination of romantic artists, and by 1828 French composer Auguste Panseron (1796-1859) had published a ballad for soprano and violin entitled Le Songe de Tartini.
