Chase's portrait of Thomas Ulvan Taylor, who served as University of Texas at Austin's first dean of the School of Engineering from 1895 to 1936, seems to catch Taylor during a pause in his reading. His finger marking his place, he sits upright, forceful and alert in a dark suit. His sturdy chair and a dynamic red background strengthen his frame. Sharp sidelighting accents the innovator's head and hands; this serves to symbolize his pioneering achievements in academe and engineering.
