18th century
19.05 cm x 14.61 cm (7 1/2 in. x 5 3/4 in.)

Cosmas Damian Asam (Benediktbeuern (Bavaria), 1686 - 1739, Munich) Primary

Object Type: drawing
Artist Nationality: Europe, German
Medium and Support: Brush and gray wash over black chalk on cream antique laid paper
Credit Line: Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017
Accession Number: 2017.885

Asam was the leading fresco painter in Germany in the early 1700s. With its very loose construction, fluid wash and hovering light this drawing not only resembles several firmly identified drawings by the artist but suggests his style of painting. The light sketch of an articulated border indicates that this was a preparatory study for a painting within a decorative setting.
