Crome’s significance to landscape art lies in his sensitivity to local identity rather than to a classical or idealized view of nature. In 1803, he founded the Norwich Society of Artists in the East Anglia region of England, signaling a shift away from the major artistic centers and capitals towards the provinces. The group flourished, and by 1823 its annual exhibition featured 4,600 works by 323 different artists.
