An angel holds aloft the veil Veronica used to wipe Christ’s face on his way to Calvary and upon which his features were miraculously preserved. His unusual posture, the fluttering draperies, and the flashing light convey excited movement, therefore spiritual agitation. This print is one of Dürer’s six etchings. These are among the earliest examples of the technique, and the first in which its potential for individual, even eccentric expression was explored. This impression is distinguished by its printing before any corrosion of the plate and its especially rich inking.
