Executed between 1638 and 1641, Van Dyck’s painting of the young Charles was not engraved until 1649. Along with Ferdinand III, these portraits demonstrate how the
Iconography continued to develop well after Van Dyck’s death. Charles, Prince of Wales, was the son of Charles I (1625-1649) and assumed the throne after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until his death in 1685.
