The Lamentation

17th century
40.6 cm x 56 cm (16 in. x 22 1/16 in.)

Schelte Bolswert (Bolsward (The Netherlands), ca. 1586 - 1659, Antwerp) Primary

Object Type: print
Artist Nationality: Europe, Flemish
Medium and Support: Engraving
Credit Line: Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Archer M. Huntington Museum Fund, 2001
Accession Number: 2001.2

Bolswert was a principal figure in the team of engravers that Rubens employed to reproduce his paintings. This print applies the same collective, unprecedently pictorial and influential language to a painting (today in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich) by the other great Flemish Baroque master. This impression, of a state before the addition of any inscription to the blank area at the bottom, and is exceptionally fine.
