Ploos van Amstel was a discriminating collector of earlier drawings and an extraordinarily talented self-taught printmaker. Refining techniques and developing new processes for etching, he brought the reproduction of drawings to an unprecedented level, with many of his works appearing hand-drawn. This is a choice example because of its very appealing subject, semblance of rich ink wash, and perfect preservation. The estate stamp on the verso shows that it remained in Ploos’s own collection.
