Children Dancing

circa 1621
17th century
26.8 cm x 23.8 cm (10 9/16 in. x 9 3/8 in.)

Jacques Stella (1596 - 1657) Primary

Object Type: print
Artist Nationality: Europe, French
Medium and Support: Etching
Credit Line: Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Leo Steinberg Collection, 2002
Accession Number: 2002.464

With its playful imagery recalling Netherlandish genre prints, indeed begging a moralizing inscription, and its incongruously refined drawing owing much to Callot, Dancing Children may well have been Stella's first attempt in technique. In any case, the print is exceedingly rare.
