Illustrating a scandal that absorbed the public for months, Mary Anne Clarke is pictured before the bar of the House of Commons. She and her lover, the Duke of York, were accused of selling army commissions at bargain prices. The Duke resigned shortly after being acquitted; Clarke, however, was convicted of libel and imprisoned.
