A late disciple of Blake, Palmer carried the visionary tradition into the late 19th century. His work combines the Romantic fervor and self-conscious poetry of his mentor with the regular composition and epic flavor of classical landscape. Starting in 1850 he was active principally as an etcher of carefully drawn, repeatedly bitten, and mysteriously radiant plates. The Morning of Life is one of the finest of these transcendental pastorals.
