In an unusually modern style for the date, Blatherwick’s delicate flowers are swallowed up by menacing, deep black, turbulent marks. She worked with the side of the crayon and the texture of the stone to achieve a range of expressive marks in black and white before adding hints of color in paint. The contrast between the surface of the paint and the print highlights the qualities of lithography that Blatherwick utilized: texture as well as flat areas of black, severe contrast alongside subtle grays, and a range of marks made with all sides of the crayon.
