This engraving is the only record of the altarpiece that Titian executed for the Santa Maria degli Angeli, Murano, in 1537. When the convent could not meet the artist’s price, it refused the picture, and he gave it as a present to either Charles V or his wife, Queen Isabella. Last mentioned in Spain in 1794, the painting was apparently lost during the French occupation.
