Like the chaste union of Mary and Joseph, the mystic marriage of Saint Catherine promotes a spiritual life dedicated to Christ and one that rejects the worldly concerns and physical relations that marriage assumes. Catholic hagiography is replete with stories of Roman women converted to Christianity who were martyred and made saints for having rejected their suitors and the married life.
