According to the sixteenth-century biographer Giorgio Vasari, Raimondi’s copies were so successful that they were sold as authentic Dürers. Vasari relates that Dürer became so enraged that he traveled Venice to make an appeal to the city council. The ruling, however, stated that Raimondi could continue to publish his copies provided that he remove Dürer’s monogram. Although Vasari’s account is probably heavily embellished, Dürer was in fact an early pioneer for the notion of intellectual property, and similar legal contests between Dürer and his copyists are documented in other cities.
