This engraving is traditionally called the Cène aux pieds – the “supper with the feet” – because those of the Apostles seem so conspicuous under the table. Bartsch believed the print to be “one of Raimondi’s most perfect and rare.” In its formal calculation and lofty ethos, it is certainly one of the great demonstrations of the classical style in early 16th-century printmaking. In collaboration with Raphael, Raimondi established the conventions and proved the profitability of translating works from other media into engraving. Steinberg’s collection includes 30 prints by Raimondi, which together with the Blanton’s previous dozen, form one of the most important groups in this country
