This print represents the Holy Family on their journey into Egypt. Resting only long enough for Mary to nurse her child, Joseph waits nearby. He communicates with the viewer, directing the viewer’s gaze toward the Virgin nurturing Christ. Her tender gestures remind the viewer of her maternal qualities; she is thus the mother of all humanity
