Here, the artist elaborates upon a photogravure that was adapted from Nadar’s well known portrait of the great satirist. The work in drypoint infuses the neutral surface with striking gesture and texture, in turn contributing to the evocation of Daumier’s thorny personality. This print was one of a series of portraits of the great masters of the 19th century. The series was, however, abandoned, and only a few proofs of each image were pulled.
