Like Boucher a pupil of François Lemoyne, and later a friendly rival, Natoire developed only modestly beyond his master’s style, inflecting it toward the Italians of the High Baroque, Pietro da Cortona in particular, and evolving a handsome decorative manner. This is one of two highly finished and signed drawings by Natoire in the Collection, both drawn at the beginning of his Roman period and intended for presentation. Despite some oxidation of its heightening, the drawing is extraordinarily well preserved.
