Bords du ruisseau à Rossillon (Ain) [Edge of a Stream in Rossillon]

1867
19th century
13.6 cm x 22.9 cm (5 3/8 in. x 9 in.)

Adolphe Appian (Lyon, 1818 - 1898, Lyon) Primary

In this print, Appian achieves a silvery, cold light that conveys a somber day. An overcast sky, vacant of birds or discernible clouds, bears down on a foreground rendered all the more claustrophobic by the mirror-like reflection in the pond of the tangled trees along the banks.
