Trained in Rome with Baciccio, Altomonte worked first at the court of Poland, then from 1699 at Vienna. His many religious works and secular projects were important in bringing High Baroque style to Austria. This study for a ceiling painting is characteristic in function and style. It was probably a preparatory study for a canvas depicting the first major battle between Alexander and the Persians, part of Altomonte’s decoration of the residence of the prince-bishop at Salzburg.
