This plate comes from a series of eight that illustrate scenes from Alfonso’s Parigi’s production of the melodrama, The Wedding of the Gods. The production was staged in celebration of Ferdinando II de’ Medici’s marriage to Vittoria della Rovere, princess of Urbino. Stefano della Bella had succeeded Callot as official printmaker to the Medici. As Alfonso Parigi maintained the style of productions by his father, Giulio, so Della Bella respected artistic conventions going back to Cantagallina.
