Stradanus spent most of his career as an associate of Giorgio Vasari in the employ of Cosimo I and then Francesco I de Medici. His Northern origins remained evident, however, in his preference of medium, including tapestry design, choice of subject, especially landscape, and a tendency toward anecdotal detail. Perhaps a study for a wall decoration, this drawing places a noble couple amid bucolic activities -- a subject common in late-century Northern art -- in a garden made dis-tinctly Florentine by a fanciful recollection of the Palazzo Pitti.
