Lepautre etched more than two thousand plates of ornament and architectural elements. His fertile imagination extended to series of Old and New Testament subjects with condensed narrative and elaborate enframement. Especially measured in construction and pure in form, this scene from his Life of Moses seems not just an emblem of French classicism but a projection of the Cartesian mind. Despite such inventions and qualities, Lepautre's etchings rarely receive serious consideration.
