Kleiner trained as an engraver and specialized in architectural views. This study is one of four such views of Viennese church interiors in the Suida-Manning Collection. Like most of Kleiner’s work, they were probably intended for a series of prints. This particular view records the high altar in Vienna’s principal Jesuit church. The altar was designed by Andrea Pozzo, a renowned architect, theorist, and master of perspectival construction who had close ties to the Order. Executed in 1709, the altar was destroyed in a renovation of the late 1700s.
