A seemingly inexhaustible engraver, Antonio Tempesta took on huge projects during the 1590s, including the great map of Rome of 1593. In 1595 he began producing folios of hunting scenes, a genre unprecedented in Rome. Lion Hunt comes from a later collection, as the series stretched well into the seventeenth century.
