This is one of seven plates illustrating the elaborate production of a comedy, The Judgment of Paris. The play (written by Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger) was staged as part of the celebration of Cosimo II de’ Medici’s wedding to Maria Maddalena of Austria. The series established the format, style and use of etching in later illustrations of the Medici’s theatrical productions.
