Francesco Rosaspina was the leading printmaker in late eighteenth-century Bologna and a professor at its academy. Here he appears as the older, heavy-set figure in topcoat seated at the right end of the table as he supervises a class of young draftsmen. Tomba studied with Rosapina and carried on his activity as a reproductive engraver. He conceived this print as a tribute to his teacher, with its fine order and meticulous execution conferring a special dignity.
