An unknown engraver completed the background in stages, as is evident in the differing states of this print. In the fifth state one can see the progressive wearing of the plate; the engraved portion of the second state prints lighter than the rest of the background. Son of Pieter Brueghel, Jan was a celebrated landscape and seascape painter. He often collaborated with other artists, including Peter Paul Rubens. Brueghel provided the landscape while Rubens furnished the narrative compositions with figures.
